HI i have ibm think pad and there is a problem with its lcd i.e theres nothing apears in it exept a dim light on black surface when i plug in an external monitor it works fine but it cant play any vedio files,i feel that its light is not gone properly cause when i press fn -f4 i can feel the dim light but it doesn’t make appear any picture ,its a p3 notebook plz help me to find the problem im a student and can i fix it
cj2600
Sumit Solomon,
Are you sure there is no image on the screen? Maybe the image is on the screen but it’s very dim? Look very closely at different angles, you even can use a flashlight.
If you can see a very faint image then most likely you have a faulty screen inverter. Last week I created a guide for replacing inverter board on an IBM notebook.

Venuvendra,
Reseat the hard drive, just remove it from the laptop and put it back, maybe it’s just a loose connection. Try again after you reseated the drive. You can test the hard drive with Hitachi’s drive fitness test. Download this utility and run an advanced test, see if tit can find any problem with the drive.

I have IBM ThinkPad 600 notebook. On the start it shows error 8611. Then I press “Esc” computer restart and then I press “F1” and it boots normally. But it is very slow to repeat this procedure every time I when start the laptop. I can’t download Hardware Maintenance Manual for ThinkPad 600 from the link above? Can you tell me what error 8611 is and how can be repaired?
Thanks,
Branislav

RE: …error is comming on the screen is

This IS NOT A HARDWARE FAULT!!
I had the exact same thing last week on a T60 after upgrading the BIOS,
CHECK IN Your bios settings menu
>Serial ATA ( SATA)
SATA controller mode option.
Default is AHCI
Change this to “Compatibility” save and exit.
OS setup will now be able to find the controller and hard disk without issue.

Branislav Jandric,
The link above worked absolutely fine for me.
Anyways, I downloaded the HMM and searched it by 8611, I found some information on the page62. Here’s a quote from the HMM:

Dear c/2600,
I would like to thank you for your help.
Important: The 8611 error is telling you that the Trackpoint or Keyboard for the Thinkpad has stopped working.
I just disable the Track Point in CMOS and everything is working perfectly.
Thanks anyway,
Branislav

anyone heard of this trouble on ibm thinkpad r32 ?
I heard it’s common
when you boot the laptop, sometime nothing happens
sometime you get garbage video (even on the vga port)
sometime it works just fine, but any vibration or shock will crash the laptop and make it display video garbage
someone on ebay offers BGA reflow services for this laptop
turns out there is a defect in the design that causes stress on the pcb, and it causes the centered ATI graphics chip to lift some of it’s ball contacts, so when you hit (slightly) the laptop, random pins of the graphic chip get disconnected
I have a laptop that had this problem, bought a replacement board, same problem !!!! arg !!
if I apply enough pressure on the graphic chip (I wedged a rj45 connector between the graphics chip and the keyboard) then it’ll boot most of the time and it’ll handle most everyday hits, (like picking it up from a table or closing the lid)
but eventually the rj45 loosen and it stops working
now I have 2 of bad boards but the bga reflow guys asks 300-400$ to resolder the chip (which is cheap for bga repair) but it’s obviously not worth it for such an old laptop
anyone ever heard of someone fixing this problem with a hot air gun maybe ? some kind of homemade reflow thing ?

I have a Thinkpad R40. The Network “card” is not working. I purchased a docking station to bypass the RJ45 and had the same problem. LED will illuminate, but does not connect. I suspect this is a common issue as I’ve seen a few R40s listed on ebay with the condition. Is it repairable (by me)? What chip do I need and where is it located on the motherboard?

Many thanks for all this information; great to find it all in one place!

HI all
Jean-Francois Perreault, I have the same problem .. with IBM ThinkPad T41, i have a lot of experience in laptop repairs, but I never had like this one, as you say .. I gues it is VGA chip problem .. I tryed to resolder BGA VGA board .. as you see it is made GPU and VGA RAM on the same little board , and it is so difficult to resolder that, couse you can’t be shure if the problem is in memory chips .. or on GPU .. or in that vga borad, so I get my HOT air gun .. actialy it is a BGA rework station .. and I heat all this board .. and the notebook start working fine .. but it was for couple of day .. I gues I have to heat it more to resolder all the ball contacts, ‘couse in metter of fakt is that when you heat it .. that balls change his volume .. and may be it make some contant .. but when they cool out .. it losing contact again .. if you read this .. pls e-mail me .. if you did find some Idea how ro repair it .. I will try again to resolder that BGA .. and If i have more stable succes .. I will let you know .. if I have your email offcourse 🙂
Yonko Stoimenov
actualy .. I did remember .. I had some problem like that before, it was in notebook Toshiba S1 ? or something like that .. it was again with Ati 7500 GPU .. and there was similar problem .. I tought that it is a memory chip problem .. and I replace it, .. but it didn’t help .. may be if I tryed to resomer BGA GPU .. it will help . but unfortunatly .. this notebook is not in range any more.. what ever .. I will appreciate if you mail me if you find solution …

i have a problem with the installation of xp in a31p ibm thinkpad.
after formating the harddrive setup couldnot able to copy some files like p3.sys, modem.sys, d3d8.dll, etc. i tried many times with many bootable cds. a blue screen appears notifying to disable bios memory like chaching and shadowing. after that i enter in the cmos by pressing f1 but i could not find the option for bios memory generaly it is avalable in other computers
Ken
We can attempt reflowing the BGA ram and GPU on these boards if you cant find anyone to do it for you. (Garb video issues).. HP’s are showing this issue on a ton of models and Hynix and Samsung EOL’d the components. (Think they found a major issue and shut them down).. Many times the RAM will fail even if its mounted on top of the GPU its self which in my opinion rules out board distortion, As the GPU would have to warp from the board and in turn warp the RAM wafers. Inferior solder spheres or the wafers themselves warping slightly makes more sense to me. (This problem is also well known on the Xbox 360’s/Same RAM)

these wies come from left hindge but i do not see where to re-connect this wire.
cj2600
Bernard H. Cooper,
Are you asking about white and black wires? These are wireless card antennas, route these wires so they go to the wireless card and then connect them to the card.
White cable to the main connector and the black one to the auxiliary connector.

Anybody had any power connector problems? I have fixed them on toshiba before but never Tpad. I have a tpad R40 that will run from the battery but will not show any AC when plugged in. It is not a AC adaptor problem as I have 2 adaptors and they both are the same problem. If I wiggle the connector a lot it will flash the AC light on the laptop. Pretty sure I am on the right track here just need some confirmation. The connector looks like a real bugger to remove and replace.

William,
You said the screen doesn’t turn on then you switch on the laptop. Does the screen changes color at all? Can you see any dim image on the screen or it’s completely “dead”?
Did you try starting the laptop with an external monitor attached? Can you get any image on the external screen?
cj2600
Ronnie,
Does it mean that your laptop will not start from the battery power? It is possible that you have a bad battery but I doubt that it is somehow related to the Window reinstallation.
Try this. Unplug the AC adapter. Remove the battery. Wait for 1-2 minutes and try starting the laptop from the battery again.

cj2600
marland countyman,
Do you get any LED lights when you plug in the AC adapter? If not, then it’s either a bad AC adapter or there is something wrong with the motherboard. You can test the AC adapter with a voltmeter. If the AC adapter outputs correct voltage, most likely your have a motherboard problem.
marland countryman

Hello, I have a proble with my laptop, when(IBM Thinkpad T60 ) i start my laptop,it start beep and Thinkpad and Touchpad is Freezed(Not worked).
This problem was occur due to drop glass of juice on my laptop
Can anyone tell me what is going on?
cj2600
haris,
If you are lucky, the juice damaged only the keyboard. If not, then it damaged the motherboard. The only way to find out what is wrong is to remove the keyboard and take a look at the motherboard.
Pete
Does anyone know if the GPU/ATI BGA problem (powers up but won’t boot, no video, get 4 beeps) effcats T30s? We bought a used T30 from IBM and it lasted 5 months. I press on the ATI chip but it won’t boot, so not sure if its the same issue or not.

hi, got an IBM ThinkPad r51
got the problem with the battery charging..
it seems that windows detecting that battery is charging but physically it doesn’t at all..
one thing i’ve noticed is that when i power on the unit the battery indicator LED blinks..
any help on this..
please email me..
thnx..
cj2600
jopher,
I assume there is nothing wrong with the AC adapter. The battery will not charge only in Windows or it will not charge even with the laptop turned off?
The battery plugs directly into the system board, so it’s either a faulty battery or there is something wrong with the motherboard. Replace the battery first.
san
I have an IBM thinkpad r51e – it powered off suddenly and now it won’t turn on, no light, no power, no battery charge. As far as I’m concerned the battery is fully charged. Seems that many IBM’s suffer this problem, mine is 20 days out of warranty, these things are a total waste of money.

Hi all,
Im having a problem with my T43 Laptop. When i power the laptop on im getting a sequences of beeps 3-1-4-3 and nothing appearing on the screen. Ive read something about 11 beeps and reseating the Cache Memorey Chips but i cant find them.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
cj2600
Daniel,
Check the lid close switch, make sure it’s not stuck inside the case. Try tapping on the switch, it might help to release the switch and turn on the backlight.
DRC
KG: Cache Memory is located inside of the T43’s Intel CPU. The BIOS is likely reporting a processor error. I have two T43’s that are doing the same thing, and only recently. I’ll test with a new CPU and report my findings.

IMB T-30 system board removal instructions: I would like to know if someone know how to remove mother board of T-30 notebook. Do I have to remove LCD screen in order to remove system board? Please help if someone know about it. Thanks.

Shab,
You’ll find the laptop disassembly instructions in the maintenance manual. You don’t have to remove the LCD screen from the display assembly, but you have to remove the whole display assembly.

Hi,
I have a problem with my ThinkPad X30. It suffered a spill of liquid and now it doesn’t turn on. I thinks that is a problem with the motherboard, but I don’t know what. All other pieces are functional (tested on another laptop). But I don’t know if I have to replace a chip or something. Can you help me?

Hi I have a ThinkPad R51 and having screen flickering issue then the computer freezes up and then I have no choice to reboot. It only happens when I put pressure on the left side of the unit. Example: typing with a little pressure if my palm (hands) lean on the left side and then it will flicker then freeze. I tried replacing the battery, checked the LCD (ok), Keyboard (ok), AC adapter (ok), and even had a PC repair shop look at it but the tech was a little hesitant to open it up because he stated that it would be a 3 hour job. The repair joint is one of those small overnight clueless wanna be Tech PC reapir shops. He told me any other repair place would immediately without second guessing that my motherboard is bad. Does anyone have any idea or feedback regarding my situation? I’m almost ready to take it apart on my own, but I’m affraid to damage it more.
cj2600
Felix,
It doesn’t take 3 hours to disassemble this laptop. 🙂 Any experienced technician will take it apart in 15-20 minutes, but it does take time to troubleshoot the problem.
It’s likely that this is memory related issue. Maybe the memory module (modules) is not making a good contact with the motherboard or maybe one of the memory slots is faulty. Both memory slots are located on the left side of the motherboard. You can access one slot from the bottom of the laptop and another one you’ll find under the keyboard. Try reseating both memory modules (if you have two installed). Move them from one slot to another. Test the laptop with only one module installed into different slots. For example, if the memory slot under the keyboard is bad, you still can use the laptop with one memory module installed into the slot on the bottom. For this test you’ll have to remove the keyboard, it’s not difficult at all. You’ll find step by step instructions in the maintenance manual.
By the way, run memory test, you can use Memtest86+.
Also, you’ll have to narrow down if the problem is related to the LCD/video cable or components on the motherboard.
I would disconnect the video cable from the motherboard and test the laptop with an external monitor. If the laptop still freezes even without the LCD attached, then this problem is related to something on the motherboard and not related to the LCD or video cable connection issue. I doubt that this is related to the connection between the video cable and the motherboard. Even though the video cable connector is located on the left side of the motherboard, it’s on opposite side from the palmrest and located close to the left hinge. But still worth trying.
If the problem is not related to memory, memory slots or connection between the LCD and motherboard, most likely you have a faulty motherboard.
Unfortunately I cannot give you more accurate diagnostics without looking at the laptop.
Felix
Thank you cj2600! I’ll try that.
DRCray
KG: I ended up replacing both motherboards that were doing this. It resolved the 3-1-4-3 issue without having to replace anything else.
DRCray
KG: I’ve also found that the 3-1-4-3 issue in a T43 can also be a faulty PC4200 Module under the keyboard. I had a 3rd one like this today.
DRCray
Nevermind, that memory error was 1-3-4-3 – It was just a coincidence that after replacing a motherboard with a 3-1-4-3 issue, I installed a bad memory module and was able to produce a 1-3-4-3 error. After replacing the motherboard with the 3-1-4-3 error, and replacing the defective memory module, all was well in this case.

Help!!!!!! Hi, I am having a few problems with a T41 after a rebuild. I have replaced the systemboard, but now don’t seem to be able to boot it up. When I switch it on the fan start and the battery and circle with a z in light up but it doen’t engage the hdd to boot. I can get it to boot if I lift the keyboard and press on the palm rest connecter, however if I take the pressue of this it freezes or if it get moved at all it freezies. I have a IBM R51 i have the opposite problem of most of you, my lcd backlight wont dim, the keyboard controls showup on the screen as the bightness being dimmed and bightened but nothing happened, ibm told me to reseat the lcd cable connection on the botherboard… i did that and nothing happened, i was then told to delete the ibm video drivers and ibm keyboard drivers and update the bios .. did that and nothing happened, i even went so far as to reinstall XP SP2 to eiliminate all software problems … and i still have the problem… any ideas on what to try next ?

I have a thinkpad G40 and when i opened the laptop main case the power connection between LCD and motherboard became loose. now i can just see a dim image on the LCD. i am definitly sure that the problem is not of the LCD invertor, LCD backlight or LCD Cable malfunctiong. because i tested them with my friend laptop and they were ok. the problem is just about the LCD backlight power connection with the motherboard which happened when i inexperiencely opened my thinkpad main case. Can anybody kindly help me to solve my problem?

I have a Thinkpad T30. When I start my computer it load the Window XP as normal. When it comes to the ‘Welcome’ window, sometimes after a few seconds the Screen goes blank but I can still see the Processing Icon working on overdrive. I restarted my laptop and this time the desktop window comes up but my Processing icon is still working at overdrive when no application are running. When I open one application, it takes a long time to open. Also after several minutes, my screen goes blank again but the processing icon still at overdrive.
I have a 1 GB RAM and 2.00 Mhz Processor and this is the first time I am experiencing this. Before everything was working fine and quickly.
Any Ideas?
cj2600
Asif Iqbal,
Go the the task manager and find out witch application consumes a lot of CPU power and memory. Try ending the process and see if it helps. Maybe this application has to be reinstalled.
Also, I would run diagnostics test on the hard drive. You can use Hitachi’s drive fitness test, you’ll find link to this utility in Resources. It’s possible that the hard drive is failing.

Hi, my T30 after cleaning have died. Once powered on, lights will flash, fan starts, but no picture. Removing RAM will beep (as expected), but removing CPU will have no effect. The same start lights, fan, … black screen (as expected). Question, is there anything else to suspect, then burned CPU? e.g. motherboard, BIOS, … I don’t know what else?
Thanks,

Norbert,
Did you lock the CPU in the socket? make sure it’s locked.
Test the laptop with an external screen. Do you get video on the external screen?

Hi,
I spilled about a cup of tea on my T60–it shut off right away and I thought I cleaned it pretty well, so I turned it back on. It started up but then shut down in the middle of Windows loading. I took it apart and am letting dry even more. Is this a bad sign? Am I fried? Is there any chance of it surviving?
Thanks,
C
cj2600
Courtney,
Ideally, you’ll have to disassemble the laptop, remove the motherboard and let it dry for a few days. After that you have a slight chance that the laptop will work.
After the liquid spill the first thing what you have to do is:
1. unplug the AC adapter
2. remove the battery
3. turn the laptop upside down
4. disassemble and clean the laptop
5. let it dry for a few days
Only after that you can try turning it on.

I have a problem with my ibm note pad t30, everytime I turn it on, the screen doesn’t turn on, and it beaps 8 times, then nothing happens.
Is there a way i can fix this problem?
please and thank you.
cj2600
marina,
How it beeps? Is it: One short beep, pause, three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short beep.
Then it’s either bad memory stick or system board problem. Try reseating the memory module, move it to the empty slot.
By the way, you can find beep symptoms in the laptop HMM on the page 54.

600x – i boot the machine from cold and use it for 10 minutes and then it blue screens. it appear to have heated a lot during that time. subsequently when i boot it fails and bluescreens almost immediately. Can anyone offer a suggestion – is it memory, motherboard or hard drive likely?
thanks so much!!!

should have said T23 on last entry …
also the bluse screen error occurs in two ways
1. after usage (per description in last posting) with error statement “process or thread crucial to sys operation unexpectedly exited or was terminated” “check hardware or software changes” then the following numbers … 0x000000F4, 0X00000003, 0X-83274530, 74684, F9020
2. when rebooting on just battery power it immediately blue screens with error message “unmountable boot volume” “dump of physical memory” numbers X-000ED, OX-8045F9F88
Any insights appreciated 🙁
Thanks!
cj2600
Kondrad,
Could be:
1. Connection related issue, maybe connections are loose. Reseating the video cable connectors can help to fix this problem.
2. The inverter board is going bad. Try replacing inverter.
3. The backlight lamp is dying.
cj2600
Emily C. Klase,
Is this problem appear only on the laptop screen? Did you test your laptop with an external monitor? The external video is fine or it’s getting fuzzy the same way as video on the internal LCD screen?
If external video works fine and this problem appears only on the internal LCD, apparently you have a problem with the LCD screen and it has to be replaced.
cj2600
Michael,
You can test laptop memory with Memtest86+ and test the hard drive with Hitachi drive fitness test.

Could be bad memory module. Try reseating memory.

Hi, got a IBM T23 and recently the monitor is fading in and out…. If the display does not return I can move the top around until the displays returns.. it there an easy solution rather than a replacement? or using the laptop as a base and attaching an external monitor?
Thanks.

I have an IBM I series 1300 laptop, I just replaced the hard drive in it but have no recovery CD’s for it. I did install windows on it but I could really use a drivers recovery CD. I can download the drivers form the lenovo site but it’s not working out, if anyone has one they can make an image of and send my way or if they can burn me one and mail it my way, I’d pay, I’m tryign to get this going for someone and am about out of time and well beyond out of patience.
cj2600
Peter,
Could be loose connection between the video cable and the LCD screen. You can try reconnecting the cable on the back of the LCD screen but it means you have to disassemble the display panel. Also, try reconnecting cable on the inverter board.
You can do that. Connect external monitor to the VGA port on your laptop. Turn on the laptop. If there is no video on the external monitor, use Fn+F7 keys to switch the video output from internal to external.

I have aquired a IBM R31 ThinkPad and it seem like the hard drive had been wipe clean of all hard disk drives. It also do not have Window XP, operating system software. It has a 20 gigabyte hard drive and the battery do not hold a charge. Re-installing those software, it that something I can do, or do I need to have a professional do it, and is it worth the while?
anil
today when i am starting my laptop it had not become any process
it is not showing the bios information also please say about this problem
cj2600
liezel,
Try using Windows System Restore utility and revert your system back to the previous restore point.
cj2600
David,
First of all, try using IBM recovery. I believe you can access the recovery interface by pressing F11 key as soon as IBM logo appears on the screen. It’s possible the hidden recovery partition is still on the hard drive and you can reinstall Windows from there.
If the recovery partition was deleted, you’ll have to find recovery discs for your laptop or install generic copy of XP and then download missing drivers from the IBM (Lenovo) website.
cj2600
anil,
If your laptop turns on but nothing appears on the screen, there could be a problem with the laptop memory. Try reseating the memory module. Try moving it into the empty slot. Try replacing the memory module with another working module.

I have an IBM ThinkPad R60. The keys were getting a little sticky so I wiped them down (using very little water). When I try to turn it back on, nothing happens. I tried when it’s connected to the wall and when it’s unplugged. When it’s connected, the battery icon and the plug icon are lit, but when I unplug it, no lights. I used very little water and only on the keys. Maybe by accident I pressed a combination of keys that messed it up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My IBM Thinkpad T22 does not power on, when i tried to power it on, it blinks the hard drive led, what may be the problem?

Dosko,
Remove the hard drive and try turning it on. Can you boot to the IBM logo?
Try reseating memory and moving it from one slot to another.
Try replacing the memory module with a known good module. Could be bad memory.

Hi, I have an IBM Thinkpad R40 2.4 GHZ 15″ LCD. The screen will flicker and freeze then go black. I found if I put pressure on the yellow triangle warning sticker directly under the center of the keyboard on a shield, then it will boot fine and may have perfect screen for 24 hours. If the laptop is barely bumped or moved then the screen will flicker and freeze. I get a blue screen error with ati memory dump. Any suggestions?
Thank you
cj2600
Steven Faulkner,
You’ll have to test the power adapter with a voltmeter. Find out if the voltage is correct.
If the power adapter outputs correct voltage, try starting the laptop from the adapter with the battery removed. If the laptop will not start, apparently you have a problem with the motherboard.

Hi, i have an ibm lenovo r-60 laptop, the problem is that it shutsdown after i press the power button, sometimes the powers lasts a couple of seconds and shuts down. Battery is fine, power cable is fine- i tried removing the hdd and optical drives, modem and wifi cards but no luck of getting the laptop work, any idea? could it be the cpu? i checked the processor and it looked clean, no visible burn or whatsoever.

I have a thinkpad t60 that only beeps one long beep and two short beeps. I have formated the hard drive and was preparing to put os system on
cj2600
dirtyharris ,
CPU failures are not common. I’ve seen very few failed CPUs in four years. Most likely it’s bad motherboard.
cj2600
Michael,
I have an IBM T30 laptop myself and it’s possible to connect it to an external monitor via the VGA port on the back. I just did and it works fine for me.
Just connect an external monitor and turn on the laptop.
If the laptop appears to be completely dead when you press on the power button, there could be a problem with the power adapter.
Test the power adapter with a voltmeter.
cj2600
Lem,
According to the official service manual for ThinkPad T60 notebooks “One long and two shorts beeps” indicates a problem with:
1. System board.
2. LCD assembly.
3. Memory.
I would try reconnecting or even replacing the memory module first. After that try disconnecting the laptop LCD screen from the motherboard and test your laptop with an external monitor. If the external monitor is not working even with the internal LCD unplugged, probably it’s bad motherboard.

IBM R40 laptop. I run it on a docking station. My problem is that the monitor does not have a clear / good resolution. The 17″ monitor works fine when hooked up to my desktop, but when I try to run it through the laptop / docking station, the monitor does not have good resolution. Sometimes it is ok, but it is a 50/50 change on whether it will work that day.
Is this an issue with the graphics card on my R40, or a docking station issue? Please help. I am about to buy a new laptop because I am tired of working on the laptop keyboard all day.

Hi, I have a Thinkpad R51, been through the wars a tad.
It has a Radeon 9200 Mobility chip on, and now when I boot it just displays garbled pixels all over the place like an old bugged arcade machine.
I firmly believe the rest of the laptop is fine, because at points I was able to boot it fully into windows, I can’t see a bloody thing now and it still does.
Anything i can try doing to fix it or should I just get another? I’m half computer savvy and to be honest reckon it’d be cheaper buying another off ebay over getting somebody else to solder it.
Regards.

Laptop IBM T41: switch on the power button, beeping sound and no display at all. I tried to take it to technicians and to every ones shock, there was a hard kind of box cut paper put on above the processor fan. the technician recommended a new fan because to him that the old one could not hold the processor tightly. we failed to find a new one. so its disabled. any ideas because i cn’t do anything with my lovely laptop.
cj2600
Mishera,
Most likely it’s either bad memory or bad motherboard. Ask your technician to install a known good memory module first. Make sure he tries both memory slots. If it doesn’t help, apparently it’s bad motherboard.
I doubt that your problem is related to the fan or CPU. I don’t think that the laptop would give you any error message (beeping sound) with a bad CPU.
cj2600
Bryan,
First of all, make sure your problem is related to the video chip. Try booting your laptop with an external monitor. If the external monitor works fine and the problem appear only on the laptop screen, it’s possible you have bad LCD screen or video cable.
If both screens, the internal LCD and external monitor have garbled video, it’s a problem with the video card. Most likely the video chip is integrated into the motherboard (it’s not on a discrete card) and you cannot replace it. You’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.

Hello,
I have the following problem with my T43 IBM laptop, model 1871 f1g:
When it’s not plugged in, it shows that it is, and it’s charging.
When it’s turned off, the light is on (as if it’s charging), and the back of the laptop emits a squeaking sound but light, must be very quiet to hear.
The problem with this is not bothering me so much, but, if i forget to plug it in, or i’m working without ac, it won’t stand by or ,… warn me … just dies, on a empty battery,… quite annoying when your working for 2 hours for a document 🙂
If you have any suggestions, feel free to point them out.
Thank you

Thank you for the good product IBM ThinkPad Laptop R51 wireless.I bought it from a friend, and it had no accessories to show me how to fix other uses.It is giving me a good service, and I would like to get its Manual Book, so that I can know how to use on some items like printer, scaner and picture sending out, etc.Your co operation will be highly appreciated.
Thank you

Cristian Ene,
I don’t remember this model off the top of my head, but…
I believe the battery charge LED is located on the inverter board, check out the following post and you’ll find some pictures.

If the laptop is working fine except the battery charge LED, maybe there is something wrong with the inverter? Just a guess.

Hi I have an IBM Thinkpad R50e running on OEM batteries. Recently, when I switch from AC to battery power (unplug the cord with computer running), after a few minutes, the computer freezes and I need to reboot to get it started. Computer also appears to be running slower
Could this be due to installation of Microscoft Windows Updates or issues with the OEM (non original battery). The computer ran fine with these batteries for over a year.
When running on AC power, I do not have any freezing problems.
cj2600
David H,
What happens if you start the laptop from the battery when the AC adapter is unplugged? Will if freeze too or it happens only when you unplug the adapter while the laptop is running?
Try booting the laptop in Safe mode? Will it happen is Safe mode too?

I have a T20 that is working OK with AC adapter but can’t start from a good battery alone. Could you please pin point how to fix this, thanks

That sounds like a problem with the motherboard. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do. You’ll have to replace the motherboard or use the laptop as is.

Have a R32 Type: 2658-G6G.
The problem is it will not turn on using the power button but if I press the space bar or press down around the red-blue-red buttons it powers up but as soon as I take my hand away it goes off.
I think it is something simple but cannot get to the root of it.
Have totally disassembled and reassembled following the instructions in the ThinkPad R32 Hardware Maintenance Manual | Here… http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/02r2914.pdf to no avail. Please help – thanks!

I recently stopped some services in the System Configuration Tool. I cannot get them to start again. I cannot see where this is done. Also, is there a way to get prior restore dates back if you shut the restore feature off and then put it back on? Hello Guys,
I am having a strange problem with my thinkpad. 2 days back,it shutdown suddenly and wasn’t ready to boot. When I removed the power supply and rebooted it.. it worked. But as soon as I connect it with Adapter it got shut down and the same problem persists as earlier.
Is that a problem with adapter or motherboard.. Shall I try connecting with adapter without battery..or will it do a further damage. FOr the time being I am shutting it down and charge for some time and then remove adapter and boot again.
Thanks..awaiting for responses.

You cannot tell which one is causing the problem without testing the laptop with a known good adapter. Could be bad adapter or motherboard problem.

My IBM THINKPAD T40 laptop has a very wobbly DC power jack. I am somewhat electronically savvy and own appropriate ESD equipment such as a desk mat and wrist strap. Recently I bought a replacement DC power jack which is a pretty straight-forward affair: square cube with female screw hole and power cable with Molex-type plug for the inverter. I have downloaded the Feb 2006 IBM Maintenance Manual but, other than it showing the location of the DC jack it provides no guidance as to what procedure I should use for disassembling the laptop. It is specific about most of the internals but the closest reference is the procedure for replacement of the inverter. Can you recommend what specific subsection I need to be using for instructions from the HMM that will enable me to replace the DC power jack? Thanks a million !
Reben
I have the T30. I push the power button, all the light, bells and whistles goes on… and then nothing happens.
The thing is the screen doesnt go on.

cj2600
Bob O’Hara,
All laptop disassembly instructions are in the HMM.
1. Download the maintenance manual for T40.
2. Go to Removing and replacing a FRU on the page 70.

ThinkPads are very secure laptops. If you forgot the BIOS password, I’m afraid you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

Charles Zitnik,
Really weird problem. :/
Have you tried reinstalling Windows from scratch? Maybe it’s a software related?
Also, could be a bad hard drive I guess.
cj2600
Nis,
Maybe the laptop freezes because it overheats? Try cleaning the cooing fan and heat sink.
Find a can of compressed air and blow it into the fan. This will remove most dust from the cooling module. Test laptop again. Does it help?

Yes, it is a simple fix. You have to disable NumLk.
Hold down the Shift key and at the same time press once on the NumLk key. Done!

This could be memory failure. Try reseating memory modules. Try removing memory modules one by one and test the laptop with each memory module separately.
